Afro-Mexican Mother Supports San Francisco’s Latino Community with Health Services

Arriving in the US is not easy for many immigrants, and this was experienced firsthand by an Afro-Mexican woman from Guerrero, Mexico, when she decided to leave everything behind to reunite with her children.

“It was difficult because thanks to my family, my sisters, my mother, and my grandmother’s prayers, I am here,” said Cindia Martínez, a promotora.

Nine years ago, she decided to migrate to San Francisco to reunite with her children, and now she is a key figure in the community’s health sector, but the journey was not easy.

“There were many complications. We went on vacation to a shelter. I told my daughter, ‘Don’t worry, we’re going on vacation.’ ‘Mom, what do you mean?’ I said, ‘Yes, we’re going to build something there so you can save money for your scholarships,’ but I didn’t tell her about this situation. I think I’ve been able to raise my children without them experiencing trauma,” Martínez recounted.

She has also won the affection of the community, and this is the space where she works, covered with positive, educational messages that empower women.
